The flag of Big River, Saskatchewan
The flag of the Town of Big River, Saskatchewan is a straightforward yet meaningful reflection of the community’s branding and identity. Adopted around 2007, this municipal banner consists of a white field centrally bearing the town's official logo, rendered in two shades of blue. The design features the stylized words “Big River” arched above two evergreen trees, wavy blue lines, and the town’s motto “Nature’s Doorstep” beneath—all executed in shades of blue on a clean white background.
This flag is not a traditional heraldic design but closely tied to a branding initiative coordinated by the local Economic Development Committee. In 2007, the community adopted this logo to articulate its image as a gateway to outdoor recreation, lakes, forests, and the natural beauty that defines this area of north-central Saskatchewan.
Each aspect of the flag hold individual significance. The white field represents purity, openness, and the fresh landscapes that surround Big River, while the shades of blue symbolize water—specifically Cowan Lake and local waterways—as well as sky, tranquility, and reflection. Beside the name of the town are two evergreen trees which voke the boreal forest that envelops the town, underscoring the importance of forestry in local heritage and environment. The wavy lines clearly invoke the Big River itself and the network of lakes and waterways central to the town’s geography and leisure activities. The town’s motto, “Nature’s Doorstep”, serves both as a message to visitors: Big River stands at the threshold between settled community life and the natural world beyond.
Situated approximately 135 km northwest of Prince Albert on Highway 55, Big River has evolved from a turn‑of‑the‑century lumber and fishing town into a vibrant small community surrounded by dozens of lakes and the boreal forest. Throughout its history, forestry and waterways have shaped livelihoods, culture, and recreation. The town’s modern identity is anchored in outdoor tourism, seasonal camping, boating, fishing, snowmobiling, and hiking thanks to the natural geography of Cowan Lake and surrounding green spaces.
The 2007 rebranding—including the design of the municipal logo and flag - was spearheaded by Big River's Economic Development Committee, aiming to consolidate the town’s image as an inviting place for residents and visitors who seek access to nature. The resulting emblem artfully combines typography and imagery to convey both setting and identity without complexity.
Though modest in composition, the flag serves several local purposes. Displayed at municipal buildings, community hall events, parks, and local festivals, the flag offers a concise visual representation of the town’s character. As part of town websites, promotional materials, and signage, the flag reinforces Big River’s position as a rural retreat and basecamp for nature lovers. Finally, the shared imagery and motto strengthen a sense of pride among residents in a town that embraces both its natural surroundings and its frontier‐town heritage.
