Kaslo, British Columbia

The flag of Kaslo, BC

The flag of Kaslo, British Columbia, is a vivid representation of the village’s rich heritage, natural beauty, and enduring connection to its maritime past. Set against a deep blue background, the flag features a zigzag white band across the top, symbolizing the surrounding Selkirk Mountains, and two wavy white bands at the bottom, representing the waters of Kootenay Lake. Prominently displayed is a white depiction of the SS Moyie, a historic paddle steamer that once served the region.

The SS Moyie holds a special place in Kaslo's history. Launched in 1898, it operated on Kootenay Lake until 1957, facilitating transportation and commerce during a pivotal era of growth. After its retirement, the vessel was preserved and restored by the community and now stands as a National Historic Site of Canada—the world's oldest intact passenger sternwheeler. Its inclusion on the flag underscores Kaslo's commitment to honoring its past and the vital role the Moyie played in the village's development.

The flag's design elements are deeply symbolic. The zigzag white band at the top reflects the rugged mountain terrain that characterizes the region, while the wavy bands below evoke the gentle ripples of Kootenay Lake, upon whose shores Kaslo is nestled. Together, these elements encapsulate the village's harmonious relationship with its natural surroundings.

Kaslo's official coat of arms, granted in 1993, complements the flag's symbolism. It features a reversed silver triangle on a blue field, bearing a blue paddle boat steaming over a silver wavy bar, with additional silver bands representing mountains and water. The crest showcases an osprey with wings elevated, adorned with a blue collar and bell, signifying vigilance and the village's connection to its environment. The motto "Industry · Progress · Wealth" encapsulates the community's values and aspirations.

In essence, the flag of Kaslo is more than a municipal emblem; it is a tapestry woven with threads of history, geography, and community spirit. Through its thoughtful design, the flag tells the story of a village that cherishes its past, celebrates its natural beauty, and looks forward to a prosperous future.
