The Flag of Lacolle, Quebec
The flag of Lacolle, Québec serves as a visual embodiment of the municipality’s history, geography, and civic values. Although modest in scale, Lacolle’s flag opens a window into centuries of colonial heritage, frontier life, and local pride.
The flag itself is white, bearing the full municipal coat of arms and the name “Lacolle.” This simple field ensures clarity and visibility of the central heraldic shield and text.
At the heart of the flag is the coat of arms, richly symbolic and meticulously composed. The shield lower part of the shield is divided "per pale" - vertically - into two halves. On the right side, there is a red field bearing a golden grape cluster with leaves and stem, an homage to the first seigneur of the area, Louis Denys de La Ronde. The red color evokes valour and boldness, while the gold signifies faith, strength, and constancy
The left side is itself divided horizontally. The top has a green field bears a golden astrolabe, representing the land crossed by Samuel de Champlain during his 1609 exploration and reflecting the early mapping of the region. On the bottom, a silver field displays a black cannon oriented to the right, alluding to Lacolle’s role as a strategic defense point during conflict, notably during the War of 1812 and the Patriote rebellions of 1838.
At the top of the shield is a blue chief (upper section) featuring three wavy silver bands, representing Lacolle’s waterways—particularly the Lacolle and Richelieu rivers—and its border location adjacent to the United States. Superimposed on these waves is a golden boundary marker, emphasizing the town’s role as a frontier community and gateway at the border.
Encircling the shield at its base are two crossed green maple-branches, emphasizing Canadian identity, and a scroll bearing the motto “AUX CONFINS, UN ACCUEIL SANS PAREIL” (“On the Borders, an Unmatched Welcome”)—a phrase capturing Lacolle's borderland location and tradition of hospitality.
When flown or displayed on the white flag, the coat of arms asserts Lacolle’s identity: a community shaped by colonial settlement, geographic position at the Canada–US boundary, strategic military history, and agricultural heritage. The clean white field allows the complex shield—visually dense yet coherent—to stand out with dignity and clarity.
In essence, Lacolle’s flag is far more than municipal branding—it’s a visual narrative. The imagery of Champlain’s astrolabe, defense cannon, grape cluster, flowing rivers, and welcoming motto all reflect the community’s layered story: from exploration and seigneurial origins, through conflicts that helped define Canada, to contemporary life along a living river border.
