The flag of the Royal Canadian Artillery
The flag of the Royal Canadian Artillery (RCA) is a powerful emblem that reflects the heritage, duty, and unity of one of Canada’s oldest and most storied military branches. With its distinctive colours and symbolism, the RCA flag represents not only the regiment’s proud history but also its continued role in national defense and international service.
The flag consists of two horizontal stripes in the colours of red (top) and dark blue (bottom). These colours are known as the traditional artillery colours, with dark blue symbolizing loyalty and truth, red representing courage and the sacrifice of those who have served. The colour scheme traces its roots back to British artillery traditions, as the Canadian artillery was initially modeled closely on its British counterpart.
At the centre of the RCA flag lies the unit’s badge, which features a stylized field gun facing left (heraldically to the right), set on a ground. Above the gun is a scroll with the motto “UBIQUE,” a Latin word meaning “everywhere,” and below the gun is another scroll with the motto “QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT,” translated as “Whither right and glory lead.” These mottos are deeply significant. “UBIQUE” reflects the fact that artillery units have served in every major Canadian military operation, from the battlefields of World War I and II to peacekeeping and NATO missions. It also serves as a replacement for the traditional battle honours found on infantry regimental colours—since the artillery's service has been so widespread and enduring that it is recognized in total rather than by individual campaigns.
The RCA badge also includes a crown, symbolizing the unit’s allegiance to the Crown and its royal designation. The inclusion of these elements on the flag emphasizes the regiment’s connection to Canada’s broader military heritage and its loyal service under the command of the sovereign.
First granted the title “Royal” in 1883 by Queen Victoria, the Royal Canadian Artillery has played a critical role in shaping the Canadian Armed Forces. Its flag serves as both a rallying point and a symbol of esprit de corps. Whether flying on Canadian soil or deployed abroad, the RCA flag is a visible reminder of the strength, skill, and history of the gunners who serve under it.
In ceremonial contexts, the RCA flag is often paraded alongside the national flag and other regimental standards. Its presence reinforces a deep sense of identity among artillery personnel, past and present. To those within the regiment, the flag is more than just a banner—it is a living emblem of shared values, sacrifices, and a proud lineage stretching back over 150 years.
