Upper Island Cove, Newfoundland

The Flag of Powell River, British Columbia

Upper Island Cove, a charming coastal town on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula, is often called “The Walled City” due to its dramatic setting beneath towering cliffs. While the community may be modest in size—roughly 1,400 residents—it boasts a distinctive flag that captures its layered identity and heritage.

The town flag is a visual tapestry, weaving together three meaningful emblems: Echoing Upper Island Cove’s British ancestry and its roots in early English and Irish settlement, the Union Jack anchors the flag’s upper left corner A central Canadian flag, honors the community’s belonging within the Confederation since Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949. Crossed with the Canadian Flag, the provincial flag—crafted by artist Christopher Pratt—extends regional pride. Its palette of blue, white, red, and gold recalls the sea, ice, human endeavour, and hope for the future.

Upper Island Cove's geography and settlement narrative deeply influence its flag. Steep cliffs, rocky farmland, and the rugged terrain shaped by fishermen from England and Ireland are echoed in the Union Jack’s presence and the provincial emblem’s maritime references. Its civilizations date to at least 1675, when fourteen people were recorded in the Berry Census. Today’s inhabitants largely descend from those early settlers and have preserved traditions of music, storytelling, and rock-wall farming structures—visible reminders of their ancestors’ labours.

Upper Island Cove’s flag is more than decorative cloth—it’s a narrative in fabric. It reflects deep-rooted histories: British colonial settlement, connection to Canada, and pride in Newfoundland’s heritage. Through layered symbolism, it pays tribute to ancestors, fishermen, and all who have shaped this unique waterfront town. Rising beneath its famed cliffs, the flag stands as a vibrant emblem of endurance, culture, and ambition, unifying past, present, and future in one elegant design.

In embracing its symbols—from the Union Jack to the provincial flag—Upper Island Cove proudly proclaims its identity: a small but vibrant community with a big horizon of history and hope.
