These colours are symbolic of different aspects of Angola’s history and identity. The red represents the blood shed by those who fought for the country’s independence, a tribute to the countless Angolans who sacrificed their lives during the years of struggle. The black band below represents the African continent, emphasizing the country's place within the larger context of the African liberation movement.

At the center of the flag, there is an emblem that sets the Angolan flag apart from others. The emblem consists of a half gear wheel, a machete, and a star. Each element of the emblem carries significant symbolism. The gear wheel symbolizes the country’s industrial and economic progress, signifying the importance of workers and the country’s development potential. The machete is a tool often associated with revolutionary movements and signifies the efforts of the people to liberate themselves from colonial rule. It also represents the agricultural roots of Angola, as the machete is often used in farming.
