The flag of Cameroon

The national flag of Cameroon is a vibrant and meaningful symbol that reflects the country’s unity, diversity, and struggle for independence. Officially adopted on May 20, 1975, the flag's design is rooted in both Cameroon's post-colonial identity and the Pan-African movement. With its bold vertical tricolor of green, red, and yellow, along with a centered yellow star, the flag represents the unity of the Cameroonian people and the hope for a peaceful and prosperous future.

The flag consists of three vertical stripes of equal width: green on the hoist side, red in the center, and yellow on the fly side. In the middle of the red stripe is a five-pointed yellow star, known as the "star of unity." Each of these colors and symbols has a specific meaning that reflects the country’s geography, history, and aspirations.

The green stripe symbolizes the lush forests of southern Cameroon, which are rich in biodiversity and vital to the country’s agriculture and economy. It also represents hope and growth, as green is often associated with renewal and life. In a broader sense, the color green pays tribute to the natural beauty of the nation and its environmental wealth.

The red stripe, placed in the center of the flag, stands for national unity and independence. It reflects the blood shed by those who fought for the country’s freedom from colonial rule. Cameroon gained independence from France in 1960 and from British administration shortly after. The red stripe connects the other two colors, symbolizing the unification of different regions and cultures within the country. The yellow star placed in the middle of the red band reinforces this message, representing unity in diversity.

The yellow stripe on the fly side signifies the sun and the savannas of northern Cameroon. It also stands for prosperity and the country’s desire for progress and development. Yellow is a symbol of warmth and optimism, highlighting the nation’s commitment to a bright future for all of its citizens.

The flag's tricolor design is inspired by the French Tricolore, reflecting Cameroon’s colonial past under French and British rule. However, the use of green, red, and yellow is also a deliberate nod to the Pan-African colors, which were popularized by the Ethiopian flag and have become symbols of African unity and liberation. These colors are widely used across the continent in the flags of many African nations, expressing solidarity and shared heritage.

Cameroon’s flag has evolved over time. The original flag, adopted in 1960, was a simple vertical tricolor of green, red, and yellow. A pair of yellow stars were added in 1961 to symbolize the federation between East and West Cameroon. The current version, with a single central star, was introduced in 1975 to reflect the transition from a federal system to a unitary state.
