The flag of the University of Prince Edward Island
The flag of the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is a symbol of institutional pride and regional identity, reflecting both the university’s academic mission and its strong connection to the province of Prince Edward Island. Though not widely known beyond Canada’s Atlantic region, the flag encapsulates the spirit of UPEI’s community, its historical roots, and its commitment to education, research, and cultural heritage.
The flag is of a Canadian Pale style with maroon and green plans and a white centre. The white central panel displays UPEI's official coat of arms. The flag is made up of three adjacent colour panels: rust, white, and green. A white central panel displays UPEI's official arms (shield). The upper left of the shield displays a set of tools while the upper right is three flowers contained by a crown. The bottom of the shield displays a book which is common among university coat of arms as it often represents academic scholarship.
The University of Prince Edward Island itself was established in 1969 through the merger of two older institutions: Prince of Wales College and St. Dunstan’s University. This union is important context for understanding the flag, as it represents a coming together of academic traditions—secular and religious, English and Catholic—into a modern, inclusive public university. The symbolism in the crest acknowledges this legacy, blending classical academic emblems with uniquely local references to PEI’s history and culture.
The flag is flown at various university events, including convocations, sporting competitions, and official ceremonies. It is often displayed alongside the national flag of Canada and the provincial flag of Prince Edward Island, signifying UPEI’s place within the broader educational and political landscape of the country. It serves as a unifying symbol for students, faculty, alumni, and community members alike, fostering a shared sense of belonging and institutional pride.
More than just a piece of fabric, the UPEI flag embodies the university’s mission to provide high-quality education in a setting that values community, sustainability, and innovation. It reflects the island’s small but vibrant population, the resilience of its people, and their dedication to academic and cultural excellence. Whether flying above the historic campus in Charlottetown or carried abroad by alumni and researchers, the flag of the University of Prince Edward Island is a proud emblem of the school’s legacy and future.
